If you’re not a part of New York’s indie music scene or managed to stumble upon them during their 2010 tour (where they opened for bands like Paramore), then you may not have heard of this band yet.
The band, fun. (period included in name), needs to thank its lucky stars that they managed to have a song covered by the colorful cast of Fox’s Glee because almost immediately Glee’s version (listen here) shot to #1 on iTunes. While that’s great for Glee, it’s even better for this relatively unknown band. Glee’s cover of “We are Young” does the song justice but give the original version a listen. Their sound is equal parts retro, theatrical, and indie rock.
“We are Young” is from their new album, Some Nights, to be released February 2012. The band says the upcoming album is more hip hop influenced (read: more commercial sounding) in an effort to “come up with something new,” according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly. I doubt we’ll be waiting long before their song "We are Young" is blowing up our radios as much as Foster the People’s “Pumped up Kicks”. But good for them, if you’re not Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, or Rihanna then it’s a huge feat just to get on the radio, so even if you have a really hipster band name like fun., the rest of us will sigh in relief and thank you for it.
